What is a Home Care Package?

A home care package is a government-funded program that helps individuals aged 65 and over (or over 50 for Indigenous Australians) receive the care and support they need to continue living safely and independently at home. Home care packages give you greater control over your care, allowing you to choose the types of services and support you need, when you need them.

Your Home Care Package subsidy will be granted based on your care and support needs. Home Care Packages are divided into four levels determined by the type of care you require, from basic needs to high needs.

Level One

For basic home care needs
Funding starting at $10,271.10 per year
Approximately 1-2 hours of support each week

Level Two

For moderate home care needs
Funding starting at $18,063.85 per year
Approximately 3-4 hours of support each week

Level Three

For high home care needs
Funding starting at $39,310.50 per year
Approximately 6-8 hours of support each week

Level Four

For very high home care needs
Funding starting at $59,593.55 per year
Approximately 8-10+ hours of support each week

How do I know which home care package level I am on?

Home Care Package Level 2: Low-Level Care Needs — Level 2 is suitable for individuals with low-level care needs. Funding from $18,063.85 per year is available alongside 3-5 hours of support per week.

Home Care Package Level 3: Intermediate Care Needs — Level 3 provides support for individuals with intermediate care needs. With funding of approximately $39,310.50 per year, you can receive 6-8 hours of support per week.

Home Care Package Level 4: High-Level Care Needs — Level 4 is designed for individuals with high-level care requirements. It offers funding of approximately $59,593.55 per year and approximately 10+ hours of care per week.

Additional funding supplements are available for cognitive impairment, Veterans, oxygen and enteral feeding.

Are there any restrictions on what I can use my home care package for?

Yes, there are restrictions on what the home care package funds can be used for. They cannot be used for non-aged care related home improvements, home appliances or fixtures, domestic appliances, rent or mortgage payments, or groceries.
